Part Three consists of discussions of Kierkegaard's Either/Or (Volume I) and selected works by Barthes. In 1847 the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard publish his “Christian reflections” on “the works of love.” I have come to believe that Kierkegaard has been largely misunderstood, misrepresented, and therefore ignored by many Christians, to their own detriment. Soren Kierkegaard's “Works of Love” 4 (Self-love: part 1). A while back I started to read two books at the same time – Sanctorum Communio by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Either/Or, Part 1 by Soren Kierkegaard. Or is it that The Tiger Lillies' new album, Either Or, is titled after and inspired by Soren Kierkegaard's famous book of the same name? Part Two--the longest part--is concerned with Kierkegaard's The Concept of Irony. Below that again is my translation of a very short extract of Søren Kierkegaard's Either/Or from the original Danish. This morning, while reading Kierkegaard's essay on crop rotation (in Either/Or, Part I), I found what I needed. The very best works of philosophy, things like Kierkegaard's Either/Or or Nietzsche's Twilight of the Idols, don't occupy a separate category in my brain as “Great Books comma philosophy”; they stand on their own merits as truly great works. I have had trouble writing it, however, always getting hung up on one particular point. If anyone, therefore refuses to learn from Christianity how to love himself in the right way, he cannot love his neighbor either. When your soul rises clear from the whole world around it; then right above you will appear, not some ideal image of man, but the eternal glory of creation itself; then will the heavens seem to part and your own “I” will choose itself, or rather it will accept itself. I was writing my own Northern Lights if you like. Scríbhneoireacht, Writing, Blog, Cic Saor.
